BRB

If you've been looking for a new post lately there has been none. The holidays have been kicking my butt with more hours at work, parties, having family in town, etc. All which are very good things and have been thoroughly enjoyed, but has left me a little run down and allowed some kind of icky green snot monster to invade my system.

Will be taking the next couple weeks to...
- manage my way through the last week of 2010 work, visiting, etc
- let my health system reboot -- lots of water and vitamins for this chick!
- hopefully have readjusted work schedules that give Chad and I some weekend time that don't include having to catch up on sleep, we might even make it to a movie past 7 pm!
- pull out the card table and make some more goodies, had have great success with the stores selling for me : )

See you in a few weeks!

GUILTY PLEASURES: THE SING OFF

My latest addiction is The Sing Off, which is a reality competition for acappella music groups. The second season just started (I didn't watch the first) and I'm hooked. Ben Folds as a judge is awesome, Shawn Stockman as a judge is awesome, Nicole Scherzinger as a judge is only okay, she's kind of dingy.

These are some of my favorite performances!

The Whiffenpoofs sadly were eliminated after the second show : ( I thought they would have made it farther.

Committed is pretty awesome. I think they'll make it to the top 3.

This last group, Street Corner Symphony, is my favorite! I hope they win : )

The third show was on tonight, so I can't find videos quite yet, but they are equally amazing.

AND THE STOCKINGS WERE HUNG

This is the first year that I'll be waking up Christmas morning in my own bed! The last few years I've spent the night before at my grandparents or been out of town somewhere else. This also means that there was a need for Christmas stockings.

I generally like things to be matching and coordinated, so the idea of picking up stockings this year for 5 (my parents, brother and the two of us) and then possibly needing more in the future was kind of scary. I decided that I would be coordinated by not having anything match. Each sock is made from a patterned sweater. And when the need to have more arises I'll just cut up another old sweater. So, there's a theme and no one ever feel like their Christmas sock doesn't belong because it doesn't look like the rest. Here's the beginning of my collection!

WEEKEND MOMENT 12.12.2010

Unknowingly hit up happy hour at Sonic and got my Strawberry Limeade for $1 ... yum!!

DIGITAL WOES

When it rains, it pours ... so why would what be any different with anything digital?

Shortly after moving to Texas our camera started misbehaving (it may have been dropped once or twice?). It stopped taking pictures and we just finally got our act together to send it in. Luckily it's still under warranty!

Then about 2 weeks ago Chad had battle with a computer virus that had started doing stupid things to our computer. It took a few tries with different things, but it is now bug-free ... as well as free of any of the programs I use. I didn't realize how much I use Photoshop until it was gone! And we've both been coming and going so much nothing has been put back onto the computer. Luckily, again, we've got an external hard drive that we had back up of everything real important -- like wedding plans!

I've gotten a lot of stuff done, but will have to wait just a bit longer to share pictures - stay tuned!

TAKE THAT WEEKEND!

Thanksgiving was a little crazy for me. Not quite the quiet weekend I was expecting. Chad worked a lot of over time last week, including the early hours of Thanksgiving and both Saturday and Sunday after Black Friday. I worked Black Friday and all day Sunday. Between all the coming and going, setting up Christmas stuff and shopping we tried to squeeze in our apartment is a wreck!! I was not ready for Monday ...

Very thankful to have the morning off to get my life back in order! Got laundry done, kitchen cleaned, Christmas decorations that didn't get put up put away, got to the bank and post office. Opened up a new Scentsy bar -- Grapefruit Berry -- and the apartment is starting to smell lovely! I'm ready to come home tonight, take a hot shower, and crash on the couch with some knitting.

Itching to bake Christmas cookies and make caramels, but will wait until it's a little closer to my family getting here -- may have to make some chocolate chip until then.

{SCD} CUSTOM ORDER

So excited to share with you my first order via a facebook fan!

She saw a similar pair of mittens on {scd} on facebook and asked if I could make a pair with a dark grey hat to go with them. Here's the set she'll be getting!

The mittens are super cozy. They're made of coordinating wool sweaters and lined with fleece, so they keep your hands very warm. And the hat is both machine washable and dryable!

If you're interested in a custom order, give me a shout!

Dropped off my first batch of goodies today at SOBO Fashion Lounge!! Included were some of these super cute burp clothes!!

IN PROGRESS 11.24

I had a mom at preschool pass along the name of a fun little boutique there that she thought would be interested in selling my things. I met with owner and showed her a couple samples of things and she excited to carry my stuff! YAY!

So now I'm sewing, sewing, sewing to get some stuff made and in there for the weekend shoppers. Right now working on burp clothes.

Various things we discussed her taking:
Baby stuff -- burp clothes, bibs, peepee teepees, mini take along blankets ... she already has some organic onesies from another woman ... and diaper wipe case covers

Hair Accessories -- knit hats, bobby pins in all various sizes and sets

Bags -- totes with the scarf handles (she carries a ton of scarves in her store, so hopefully people will wanna mix and match!), little handbags ... hoping along the road when I master zippers a little better some cute makeup bags and once I get my act together to find clutch frames, some clutches ... also some checkbook covers: )

Hoping for a quiet few days to get stuff done!

November 23, 2010

FINISHED: WIPE OFF BOARD

Found this idea here. Got this frame for a couple bucks and put a piece of paper in rather than a picture. Had dry erase markers from Pictionary. Put in the entry way for Chad and I to write notes as we're both coming and going. Now to just remember to leave and check for messages!

SOME DOWN TIME??

Hoping to not jinx it, but I've been thinking about how quiet my week will be coming up. Normally I would watch my before school kiddo this week, but her mom has the week off so they don't need me. And there's only 1 day this week I'll have the other two. Plus the preschool will be closed Thanksgiving and the day after. I'll have 3 afternoons at preschool and hopefully after that a very mellow 4 day weekend (with the exception of a quick Black Friday shift at BBW).

I'm so excited to stay up later and sleep in and have the time to sew. So excited that I spent my morning cleaning just about everything in the apartment! The kitchen got a major scrub down -- I even pulled apart the pieces on the stove and cleaned them. It seems that it can get stuffy in our place real quick, so the windows are all open to get some fresh air in and blackberry apple oil burning. I wanna run to the store or something just to come back and unlock the door to a nice, fresh smelling place! The only thing left is putting away laundry when it's done, which I'm hoping to enlist Chad's help when he gets home from work. I hate putting away laundry.

Here's my "the only place where housework comes before needlework is in the dictionary" projects for this week
- finish the 4 out of 6 bags I have already cut out and just need sewing
- work on some more bobby pins
- make some cute baby things
- start knitting this sweater
- work on Christmas stockings for us and my family who will be here for Christmas

{SCD} ON FACEBOOK

Set up a facebook page for my things today for people to see what's been made. Need to set up my Etsy shop for items actually available as most of what's on the FB page have already found homes. Also got a tip today on a Fort Worth shop that could be interested in taking some things : )

EXCITING POSSIBILITIES

Feeling good about getting stuff done! This is the fourth bag of this particular style that I've made (which is missing it's strap) and this time I'm getting paid :) The same coworker I made the knit toddler hat for also asked for a bag and some custom shirts for her daughter as well. Need to take pictures yet of the shirts, but am super excited about this bag! I love this fabric!

What I'm really excited about is how "into it" people are about my handmade stuff. Little A got her birthday onesies and comments were made on how nice they were and to find somewhere to sell them. A few other coworkers have asked about hats. And tonight at a school Thanksgiving feast someone else was really encouraging about finding a way to sell these things.

We went to a craft fair/show at one of the high schools here. I was expecting lots of handmade stuff, but most of it was at home parties like Mary Kay and Pampered Chef (which are all a lot of fun, but not so crafty). Hoping to get some stuff made and try sell my stuff at one sometime in the spring. Here's a few things I think would do well . . .

- my bobby pins
- bags
- hats
- onesies/toddler shirts
- burp clothes
- peepee teepees
- and take custom orders

Anyone else have ideas? What would you buy?

I WANT IT: GLASS TILE BACKSPLASH

No, we're not in the processing of buying or fixing up a home, but whenever that day comes I've already decided on one thing - glass tile - I love it. It's so clean looking and still adds a lot of fun and dimension into a space. Will be very excited the day I get to pick some out for my own kitchen and bathrooms : )

BUSY WEEK AHEAD

The bad thing about having more than one job is that it doesn't work out often that you have a full day or weekend off!

The next day I'll have completely to myself will be the 20th or 21st, provided I don't get schedule at BBW!

Here's what I'm up to this week:
- watching K before school and dropping her off all week
- working at preschool during afternoon all week
- possible Tuesday/Wednesday evening babysitting for new family
- if not babysitting, then knit group on Tuesday night
- special art project for R & a friend Wednesday morning
- mandatory Thanksgiving event Thursday night for preschool
- Friday morning watching R & A
- Saturday shift at BBW
- Sunday morning watch R & A

Other stuff to get done:
- find new day planner!
- lots of sewing
- work on bobby pins
- knit lots of hats
- make something for Thanksgiving thing at preschool
- dream about my wedding
- don't get sick

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS . . .

While I'm couch bound (or computer bound) trying to stay inactive and feeling better - which is terrible, because today is such a sunny and cool day - I'm doing some Christmas shopping.

Here's a few things on my list.

Prescription Sunglasses --- Not particularly this pair, but I do really like them. Texas is a little sunnier than Montana and driving around without a pair gets hard on my eyes.

Miche Bag --- This should be the last bag you buy, it comes as two separate pieces, the bag base and changeable magnetic covers. Rather than emptying your bag into a new one, just change the outside. You can also change the handles.

Shoes --- There are so many shoes I want, but these are at the top of my list.

Also lots of craft books! I have a bigger wish list for books on Amazon.

There's more stuff too -- new sheets, zoo membership, the rest of a plate collection, cashmink scarves, stuff from lush, gift cards, etc!

November 6, 2010

FEELING ICKY

I had big plans for today to get lots of stuff done, but that's all out the window now. We went out last night to eat and a couple hours later it was all coming right back up :( Spent the night in the bathroom emptying the rest of my stomach and not sleeping much. No other symptoms so I'm thinking it was something I had at dinner. Hoping to be done with all this grossness by this evening so tomorrow I can try accomplish something with my weekend.

SPECIAL WEDDING PROJECT

Some of Bozeman's most exceptional wedding vendors are getting together to give away a spectacular wedding - "The Gift Worth Giving" - to a very deserving bride and groom in 2011!

Details are still coming together and I will be working on a website for the project in the next couple of days where couples or friends/family can apply for this amazing opportunity!

SHOPPING FYI . . .

I learned the hard way that Hobby Lobby is not open on Sundays!

It is the closest craft shop to our apartment and after visiting the nearest JoAnn's decided that Hobby Lobby is pretty great compared. I had a list of all the little craft projects I needed things for to start or finish, was all amped up for shopping, drove there and had to turn around and come home :( Will have to try another day ...

LIST 4: THINGS TO DO IN TEXAS

For the last 5-6 weeks we've been pretty confined to our apartment. Mostly because we didn't want to spend much money until we got paychecks coming in and felt that we had a little extra to use on fun stuff. I'm sure there's even more than this to explore, but here's a few things I've heard about or want to do!

1 - Fort Worth Zoo ... we've yet to see a tiger in a zoo, maybe we'll get lucky here

2 - Fort Worth Botanical Gardens ... DONE! It's free to walk the main gardens and a couple bucks to check out the Japanese Gardens

3 - Six Flags Over Texas ... we skipped out on the state fair, we thought this would be more fun

4 - Go see a Texas Rangers game ... Someone had mentioned to us tickets were inexpensive, we'll see how that goes next year now that they'll play in the World Series!

5 - Burgers Lake ... 30 acre park with beaches, slides, picnic area, etc!

Museums
6 - Amon Carter Museum of American Art

7 - Kimbell Art Museum

8 - Fort Worth Museum of Science and History

The Stockyards
9 - Fort Worth Herd ... cattle drive that runs every day

10 - Billy Bob's ... the world's largest honky tonk. They get really great artists to play on the weekends, you can get a general admission ticket for $15. LeeAnn Womack in November!

BOOK PROJECTS: FELT FORWARD

I don't personally have this book, but I bought it for my mom before I knew how to knit and had her copy me some patterns from it. Finishing up another Jane Hat, and then am going to start on these felted boots!

FINISHED: BIRTHDAY GIFT FOR "MISS A"

One of the few jobs I have is watching an adorable nearly 1 year old and her very silly 2.5 year old brother a couple mornings a week. Little "Miss A" has a birthday coming up in November and here's what I came up with for a gift.

Got the onesies at Walmart for $2/piece and spent an evening sewing on some fun images! Hoping I can find some more solid colored onesies, didn't want to stop sewing these!

I WANT IT: BOLERO

I'm thinking one of these could be really wonderful
with my wedding gown. Found it at this Etsy store.

October 25, 2010

CAUTION - CREATIVITY AHEAD

Luckily the card table fits in this little space behind the couch. Rather than getting out an uncomfortable folding chair it works out alright to sit in the comfy leather one : ) The ironing board does stick out just a little into walking space, but not bad enough to put it away. I'll just have to be creative in spurts, crank out lots of stuff and not worry too much about the mess, then clean it all up until the next time.

Right now I'm working on:
- Owl costume for Halloween (it's nearly done, just need to add a trim to the neckline of my dress and put some armbands on my wings)
- Birthday present for the little girl I've been watching
- Hemming some pants for work ... or maybe not, sewing other stuff is more fun
- Beginnings of a knit hat so I'll have something to bring to the knit meet up tomorrow!
- Waiting for Chad to decide what he needs me to make for his Halloween costume

Happy to be sewing again!

ON THE LIST: YARN WREATH

OWL SHOPPING TRIP

Went on a little shopping excursion to find pieces for my owl outfit. There's not a Michael's or JoAnn's real nearby, but there's Hobby Lobby - which was kind of slim for fabric options but has great selection for all kinds of other crafts (and for some reason, lots of home decor).

Here's what I got:
- 5 different fabrics, 1/4 each (5.91 total)
- Various felt (2.80)
- Felt glue (3.99)
- Elastic (1.29)
- Pillowcase (1.50 ... from Ross)

Total Costume: $15.49!! Plus my time : )

October 23, 2010

ON THE LIST: BILLY CARDI

I've just started reading luvinthemommyhood and at just the right time, this month she's posting on comfy sews vs cozy knits! I relate to her dilemma, which to use for which project, like on slippers. I've been working on a felted pair to post about soon, but a pair of sewn kimono slippers look like they'll be easy to whip up too!

She's featuring this cardigan from no big dill. It looks so comfortable and I can't wait to make one! I'm forever cold in our apartment or going to eat or a movie, this will be the perfect thing to grab to keep the chill away.

It's still hot yet here, like 85, and I'm ready for fall - for lots of baking, knitting on the couch, warm drinks, scarves and sweaters!

October 22, 2010

OWL COSTUME INSPIRATION

lady bird | owl mask | wings | owl kiddo

We thought with moving to a new place that we would not have Halloween plans or the need for costumes, but we've been invited to a co-workers Halloween party and for the last week I've been racking my mind for what I can make and not spend a lot on.

Spirit Halloween opens in Bozeman a month or so before, and of course there's costumes at Target and Walmart too. Here there are all kinds of Halloween stores, but a lot of them have the same expensive stuff that doesn't always fit the right way.

I narrowed my list down to:
- a sunflower (my original idea from months ago)
- a lady bug
- 20's flapper

And then while I was blog surfing this morning, I came across this lady bird costume and from there did a couple other searches for some ideas to be an owl. I'm so excited to have a project to work on and a costume that will be original!

October 18, 2010

THEY'RE GR-R-REAT!

Chad gives me a hard time about buying the "big" box of Frosted Flakes, but it's my favorite cereal was cheaper to buy one big box instead of 2 little ones.

Something else great? I can buy a gallon of milk for 99 cents!

October 17, 2010

SONIC ANYONE??

Chad and I were out shopping yesterday and got a little hungry at the mall. The joke of the moment is "wonder if there's a Sonic?" because they are EVERYWHERE!

I was hoping to come up with a better figure than this, but using their "find a Sonic" feature it only brings up the nearest 5. The nearest 5 to where we live are all within a 5.5 mile area! The area we were at when discussing lunch brings up the nearest 5 all within 3 miles. Sonic much?

The only thing I really can try compare it to is McDonald's. Where can you go that there aren't a ton of them? Really, Bozeman has 3. The closest one to our place now is 6 miles, and the next one after shows up as 12. And it's not just McDonald's, it's also Taco Bell, Burger King, Arby's, etc . . . and hardly any Dairy Queens!

I've not yet actually been to a Sonic but I'm sure someday we'll decide to try it and when we do there will be no worry with trying to find one.

IN PROGRESS: FRENCH PRESS SLIPPERS - PART 2

I think I had a successful time felting despite forgetting to take my project out before the washer went to rinse and spin mode! Now to let them air dry -- hoping it doesn't take more than a couple days so I can finish attaching the straps and buttons!

Also found a knitting group to join that meets twice a month -- the FW Knit Stitch Bunch -- excited to meet some people here!

AVEENO LOVE

It's so hard to decide on facial and body care products that are affordable and all work together. So I just have a lot of stuff in my bathroom. I've talked about Bath and Body Works Lavender Chamomile and LUSH Dream Cream (also lavender!). And my third love is Aveeno.

I've used their Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser for years but have discovered a few new favorites. I switched to their moisturizer over the summer and love how lightweight it is.

And then in the pages of Real Simple, I saw a "great finds under $10" kind of page and discovered the new line of body wash - my favorite is the Pomegranate/Rice. I'd hope to get a matching body lotion, but the fragrances are not all the same, so I've been using Vanilla Chamomile, which is so perfect and is not overpowering.

But my favorite is their lip treatments -- I've even got Chad and a few other friends to switch from regular chapstick to Aveeno. They're a little bit more money, but they work so well that you don't use as much, which I think is worth it.

IN PROGRESS: FRENCH PRESS FELTED SLIPPERS

This doesn't look like much yet. Right now I've got all my pieces knit and need to work next on seaming them together, then felting them in the wash to make myself some cozy slippers. Hooray for Hobby Lobby for being nearby and carrying a decent selection of yarn!

October 12, 2010

"HIPPIE BAG"

I made this for myself back in Montana a few months ago and obviously slacked a bit on getting a picture up. It's the same pattern as another bag I made but I shrunk the bottom of the bag down a little and also added some darker fabric to the bottom in thinking the patterned fabric would look more worn on the bottom after setting it down all the time. Also had a great orange button to add some for flair and found my yellow scarf/handle at Target.

Chad and I were out shopping the other day at Kohl's and the woman at the cash register said to me "oh! I love your hippie bag!". I'm not sure if that's how most people would describe my bag. Chad said it must have been the way I'd dressed (brown gouchos, olive tank top, red flip flops) and that if I'd been in jeans and a nice shirt that she would have made a different comment.

However you want to describe my bag, it's now referred to as "my hippie bag" and the next one will definitely have a more modern look!

October 8, 2010

"stuck" - stranded, perplexed, frozen

I still feel a little disorganized from moving/unpacking. There is not a lot of space in a one bedroom apartment for storage (or our large living room furniture - it extends into what is meant to be a dining area, glad we sold our table!).

So, my craft room is now a packed up craft closet in our entry. You can't see the sides of the closet, but there's about 15 apple boxes with various types of projects in each - paper, yarn, paint, scrapbook albums, kid crafts, etc. I kept out things that I'll use all the time and my favorite books, but when I get the itch to make something I'll have to haul out the appropriate box and card table and set up somewhere!

I also like to craft when I feel like everything else is done, so I don't have to stop once I start. Even though things are unpacked, I feel "undone" in not having a routine with things here yet. I've been working at a preschool and will start another seasonal job and some extra babysitting but it'll be another week or so until I feel like I'll have a better grasp on what I have going on every day.

Ready to feel unstuck and work on fun things like these!

WEDDING: INSPIRATION BOARD

I've known for quite awhile what I wanted for wedding colors - citrus and slate - and have been keeping clippings of anything I've come across for ideas. Although there's 300+ days until our wedding I have quite a bit planned already (layout, centerpieces, bridesmaids dresses, plus some!). So . . . here's a little sneak peek, some of actual things I've picked out and a few other inspiration ideas : )

PS -- the big day is set for August 13, 2011 in Montana!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

Yesterday I turned 26!

It was a little sad not to celebrate with friends in Bozeman, but Chad and I had a fun day. We didn't get motivated to do much until around 2. We decided to drive over to Dallas and went to the stores that aren't in Fort Worth - like Crate & Barrel and Lush! They have a much larger mall than anything I've seen yet here, so I did a little birthday shopping. Favorite find of the day - my new boots!

BIG NEWS #2: WE'RE ENGAGED!

Along with all this moving to Texas stuff I've been waiting for an engagement ring. Chad and I have been together for 4 years. Last summer I started nagging that I'm a little more than over with waiting any longer and when talk of moving came up the beginning of this summer told him I would not be going anywhere with him until he proposed.

We've had a summer busy summer and plenty of opportunity for him to ask, but he's a perfectionist when it comes to planning and nothing seemed quite right to him. After we'd decided on moving he starting planning that on the night before we left he would have everyone over at my grandparents for one last little goodbye party and that in front of everyone he would propose. He didn't tell anyone this was the plan, and for various reasons, no one was really able to make it on the night of. We still had things to do that night and I was pushing to get out the door, so before we left, he said he couldn't wait any longer to ask, got down on his knee and pulled out a little white ring box. And after the week we'd just had with packing and loading our Uhaul and everything else I pretty much cried through the whole thing. I said yes ; )

There isn't a date set yet. There's plenty of ideas in my head. Once things seem a little more settled with things in Fort Worth I can imagine how much time I'll be thinking of our big day.

BIG NEWS #1: WE MOVED!

I have not mentioned this on my blog yet for fear of jinxing all that was going on -- but we moved to Texas!

Chad is trying for a position with BNSF as a train dispatcher. It involves a 4 month training class before getting the job. The idea was to take the class offered in September and be working right after that. However, a week before his tests and interviews the people in charge filled the September class, so now the next one offered is in February.

Rather than waiting things out in Montana, we moved to Fort Worth, Texas to be prepared and do everything possible to get this working in the right direction. We didn't want to be in a situation with breaking a lease on our place or keeping employers up in the air about when our last days would be. Also moving in February would have been terrible through all the snow in Montana and Wyoming. So, we're here now and have time to adjust to things here before his class starts.

Thankfully, our friend Drew helped us drive down our Uhaul and 2nd car and unload it all into our tiny apartment. We went from about 1900 sf in Bozeman to 750 sf here! But it's an exciting challenge to see if we can live in our space more efficiently. Before he left we went out to PF Changs for dinner - it's the best! The area it's in is known as Sundance Square, a pretty safe spot downtown. We'd planned on a movie after dinner, but there were so many people out and things going on that we walked around and eventually ended up in a rock and roll dueling pianos bar - so much fun!

I don't mind the heat. If we moved the beginning of the summer that might be different, so it was a good adjustment to come down in the fall. I've noticed a few things, probably more than a few, that I'm not sure if I expected or not.

- No one really speeds: People tend to follow the speed limits, and rather than passing you people are pretty content with just following behind you until they get wherever they're going

- People are very friendly: Maybe it's the accent (which the lady at the bank said we'd develop) but any time we've gone to shop or eat everyone has been so nice.

- Store are clean: I'm sure there are places that are no so clean, but because of all the competition and repeats of many stores (we live so close to 2 different shopping areas that are almost identical) there must be a higher standard for keeping things as clean as they've been.

At the moment we are looking for jobs. Probably the scariest part of moving was that we didn't have immediate jobs lined up. I found a great nanny agency to sign up with, but most of their clients are in Dallas and that's too long of a commute. There's a private preschool about a block away from where we live that's looking for help. I've had 2 interviews so far and should hear back by Friday if I get that job. Crossing my fingers hard!

FINISHED: JANE HATS

This is my hat of the moment. It's a pattern by Jane Richmond, called "Jane". I really have made quite a few. The guys I know think they are a little girly, so I need to find a great pattern for the fellas that I know.

It's super quick to make and as you can see I went a little crazy on buying different colors of yarn ... it's so hard not too. Another yarn buying trip is in order soon. I will have to avoid the really nice yarn shops downtown because I know I will cave into buying something that feels incredible but comes with a pricier price on it!
